A formative educational experience for Sarah was doing math competitions in high school. Even if she didn’t always get the right answer, she liked the process of working out the problems in a just-for-fun context. It was the study of non-Euclidean geometry that opened her mind to “the constructs of how we view the world and how slightly different assumptions can produce hugely different outcomes.” Yes, Sarah truly loves both math and teaching math. She enjoys teaching at Bay in particular because the focus is on helping students figure out the material, not just memorize formulas, so that they can continue to own their learning in the future. Sarah is still a math competition booster and frequently invites students to participate, whether they are in Math Club or not!
Precept affinity: We value generosity; we share, giving and receiving help. “Helping others and accepting help is the crux of living in a society. None of us can survive alone, and to thrive we need to recognize that we can help others and we can benefit from the skills and knowledge of those around us.”
Favorite things: Acre’s grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup and their hot sauce
